Marcelo Coutinho was born in Campina Grande, Paraiba, on May 14, 1968. He is an artist and writer. He has a degree in Visual Arts from UFPE, a master’s degree in Communication Theory from UFPE and a PhD in Visual Poetics from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. He is the author of the novel „Antão, O Insone“ published in 2008 by Documento Areal and Editora Zouk, of Porto Alegre/RS and of „Isso“, to be published in 2020 also by Documento Areale Editora Confraria do Vento.
For 20 years, between the years 1997 and 2017, Coutinho was a professor at the Department of Art Theory and Artistic Expression at UFPE. In 2017 he was invited to teach at the Department of Visual Arts at the Federal University of Paraíba where he currently works. He is a professor at the Postgraduate Program in Visual Arts UFPE-UFPB, in which he coordinates the Research Group in Poiésis and Autopoiésis.
Marcelo Coutinho was one of the artists invited in 2012 to the 30th São Paulo International Biennale, one of the three most important visual arts exhibitions in the world alongside the Venice Biennale and the Kassel Documenta. He was part of the main exhibitions of contemporary Brazilian art among which stand out several editions of the Panorama of Brazilian Art, produced by the Museum of Modern Art of Sao Paulo (MAM-SP). He was present at Paths of the Contemporary: Brazilian Art 1952-2002, a broad retrospective exhibition of the last 50 years of Brazilian art, produced by the Paço Imperial in Rio de Janeiro; in 1998; he participated in the project New Visual Directions, produced by the Itaú Cultural Institute, SP; besides several editions of the Pernambuco Art Salon. In 2014 was one of the artists invited to the national collective „Grande Área Funarte“, Funarte – MinC. He represented Brazil in the exhibition Mixture + Confrontation, in Porto, Portugal, in the exhibition Ampazonas, organized by the Ministry of Culture of Bavaria, Germany and in the exhibition „Transitional Territories“, at the Palais de la Porte Dorée, Paris, France.
In 2016 he was nominated for the Pipa Contemporary Art Award, organized by the Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro (MAM-RJ) and the Pipa Institute. In 2011 he won the Fundaj Videoarte-2011 Award making the film »Soarsso«. In 2007 he was awarded in the Call for applications Arte e Patrimônio Petrobras / Minc / Paço Imperial with »Projeto Dois Vazios«, making the film »Ô«. In 2005 he won the „Arts Research Grant“, from the Fine Arts Salon of Pernambuco and Fundarpe, PE. In 2004 he was awarded the Vitae Fellowship in Visual Arts, by the Vitae Foundation, São Paulo/SP. In 2001 he received an honorable mention in the exhibition The Research Artist, promoted by the Museum of Contemporary Art of Niterói, RJ. In 1998 was awarded at the XVI National Salon of Fine Arts, promoted by the Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro (MAM-RJ) and Funarte.
In 2010 his film »Ô« was nominated for award as best fiction short film in the Brazilian Film Grand Prix 2010 by the Academia Brasileira de Cinema, RJ. »Ô« was also awarded in 2010 in the XIX Recife Video Festival, received nomination for the Caríssima Liberdade Award in Mostra do Filme Livre, RJ and participated in several national film festivals.

Graduado em Artes Visuais pela UFPE, e mestre em Teoria da Comunicação pela UFPE e doutor em Poeticas Visuais pela Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul. Por 20 anos, entre os anos de 1997 e 2017, Coutinho foi professor do Departamento de Teoria da Arte e Expressão Artística da UFPE. Em 2017 foi convidado para lecionar no Departamento de Artes Visuais da Universidade Federal da Paraíba onde hoje atua. É professor do Programa de Pos Graduação em Artes Visuais UFPE-UFPB, no qual coordena o »Grupo de Pesquisas em Poiésis e Autopoiésis«.
Marcelo Coutinho foi um dos artistas convidados em 2012 para a »30a Bienal Internacional de São Paulo«, uma das três mais importantes exposições de artes visuais do mundo ao lado da Bienal de Veneza e da Documenta de Kassel. Integrou as principais mostras de arte contemporânea brasileiras entre as quais se destacam varias edições do »Panorama da Arte Brasileira«, produzido pelo Museu de Arte Moderna de Sao Paulo (MAM-SP). Esteve presente em »Caminhos do Contemporâneo: Arte Brasileira de 1952-2002«, ampla mostra retrospectiva dos últimos 50 anos de arte brasileira, produzida pelo Paço Imperial do Rio de Janeiro; em 1998; participou do Projeto »Novos Rumos Visuais«, produzido pelo Instituto Cultural Itaú, SP; alem de varias edições do »Salão Pernambucano de Arte«. Em 2014 foi um dos artistas convidados para a coletiva nacional »Grande Área Funarte«, Funarte – MinC. Representou o Brasil na exposisção »Mistura + Confronto«, na Cidade do Porto, Portugal, na exposisção »Ampazonas«, organizada pelo Ministerio de Cultura da Bavaria, Alemanha e na Exposição »Territoires Transitoires«, no Palais de la Porte Doree, Paris, França.
Em 2016 foi indicado para o »Prêmio Pipa de Arte Contemporânea«, organizado pelo Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro (MAM-RJ) e o Instituto Pipa. Em 2011 ganhou o »Prêmio Fundaj Videoarte-2011« realizando o filme »Soarsso«. Em 2007 foi premiado no Edital »Arte e Patrimônio Petrobras / Minc / Paço Imperial« com »Projeto Dois Vazios«, realizando o filme »Ô«. Em 2005 ganhou a »Bolsa de Pesquisa em Artes«, do Salão de Artes Plásticas de Pernambuco e Fundarpe, PE. Em 2004 foi contemplado com o prêmio »Bolsa Vitae Artes Visuais«, da Fundação Vitae, São Paulo/SP. Em 2001 recebeu menção honrosa na mostra »O Artista Pesquisador«, promovida pelo Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Niterói, RJ. Ern 1998 foi premiado no »XVI Salão Nacional de Artes Plásticas«, promovido pelo Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro (MAM-RJ) e pela Funarte.
Em 2010 seu filme »Ô« foi indicado para premiação como melhor curta metragem de ficção no »Grande Prêmio do Cinema Brasileiro 2010« pela Academia Brasileira de Cinema, RJ. »Ô« tambem foi premiado em 2010 no »XIX Festival de Video do Recife«, recebeu indicação para o »Prêmio Caríssima Liberdade na Mostra do Filme Livre«, RJ e participou de diversos festivais nacionais de cinema.

Marcelo Coutinho wurde am 14. Mai 1968 in Campina Grande, Paraiba, geboren. Er ist ein Künstler und Schriftsteller. Er hat einen Abschluss in Bildender Kunst von der UFPE, einen Master in Kommunikationstheorie von der UFPE und einen Doktortitel in Visueller Poetik von der Bundesuniversität von Rio Grande do Sul. Er ist der Autor des Romans »Antão, O Insone«, der 2008 bei Documento Areal und Editora Zouk in Porto Alegre/RS erschienen ist, und von »Isso«, das 2020 ebenfalls bei Documento Areale Editora Confraria do Vento veröffentlicht wird.
20 Jahre lang, zwischen den Jahren 1997 und 2017, war Coutinho Professor an der Abteilung für Kunsttheorie und künstlerischen Ausdruck an der UFPE. Im Jahr 2017 wurde er eingeladen, an der Abteilung für Bildende Kunst der Bundesuniversität von Paraíba zu unterrichten, wo er derzeit arbeitet. Er ist Professor am Postgraduate Program in Visual Arts UFPE-UFPB, in dem er die Forschungsgruppe für Poiésis und Autopoiésis koordiniert.
Marcelo Coutinho gehörte 2012 zu den Künstlern, die zur 30. Internationalen Biennale von São Paulo eingeladen wurden, die neben der Biennale von Venedig und der Documenta in Kassel zu den drei wichtigsten Ausstellungen der bildenden Kunst weltweit zählt. Er war in Pfade der Zeitgenossenschaft: Brasilianische Kunst von 1952-2002 vertreten, einer umfassenden Retrospektive der letzten 50 Jahre brasilianischer Kunst, die 1998 vom Kaiserpalast in Rio de Janeiro produziert wurde; er nahm an dem Projekt Neue visuelle Ansätze teil, das vom Kulturinstitut Itaú, SP, produziert wurde, neben mehreren Ausgaben des Pernambuco Kunst Salons. 2014 war einer der Künstler, die zum nationalen Kollektiv Grande Área Funarte eingeladen wurden, Funarte – MinC. Er vertrat Brasilien in der Ausstellung Mischung + Konfrontation, in der Stadt Porto, Portugal, in der Ausstellung Ampazonas, organisiert vom Kultusministerium von Bayern, Deutschland und in der Ausstellung Transitionale Territorien, im Palais de la Porte Dorée, Paris, Frankreich.

Im Jahr 2007 wurde er in der Ausschreibung Arte e Patrimônio Petrobras / Minc / Paço Imperial mit dem »Projeto Dois Vazios« ausgezeichnet, bei dem er die Regie für den Film »Ô« führte. Im Jahr 2005 gewann er das Arts Research Grant, vom Salon der Bildenden Künste von Pernambuco und Fundarpe, PE. Im Jahr 2004 wurde er mit dem Vitae Stipendium für Bildende Kunst, der Vitae Stiftung, São Paulo/SP, ausgezeichnet. Im Jahr 2001 erhielt er eine lobende Erwähnung in der Ausstellung Der forschende Künstler, gefördert durch das Museum für zeitgenössische Kunst in Niterói, RJ. 1998 wurde beim XVI. Nationalen Salon der Schönen Künste, gefördert vom Museum für Moderne Kunst von Rio de Janeiro (MAM-RJ) und Funarte, ausgezeichnet.
2010 wurde sein Film »Ô« für den Preis als bester fiktionaler Kurzfilm beim Großer Preis des brasilianischen Films 2010 der Brasilianische Filmakademie, RJ, nominiert. »Ô« wurde außerdem 2010 auf dem XIX Recife Video Festival ausgezeichnet, erhielt eine Nominierung für den Caríssima Liberdade Preis in der Schau der freien Filme“, RJ und nahm an mehreren nationalen Filmfestivals teil.
