WE ARE WORTH IT

The work comprises banknotes from different countries. By using needle and thread, the sentence of »we are worth it« is repetitively sewn with imperfect stitches onto these objects in the languages representing the respective currencies. The assigned authority and value of these banknotes is undermined and they are withdrawn from circulation. These objects are transformed into a new form which does not serve any monetary purpose.
This work refers to Joseph Beuys’ notion of »healing« society and brings it to our attention with today’s context. How is »healing« ensured? How is healing process understood? Given that humans are conscious, how can this consciousness be turned into curative actions for the society?
These questions from Beuys become »re-questionable« under the conditions of current pandemic which affects the whole civilization. And today’s need for healing literally refers to a biological healing. How can this healing be ensured?
The artist, with this work, underlines the economic and financial inequality which has become more visible during the pandemic. This work questions the elements of economic power, potency and authority by emphasizing the current pandemic and healing processes.

Die Arbeit besteht aus Geldscheinen verschiedener Länder. Mit Nadel und Faden wird der Satz »we are worth it« in den Sprachen der jeweiligen Währungen wiederholt mit unvollkommenen Stichen auf diese Objekte genäht. Die zugewiesene Autorität und der Wert dieser Geldscheine wird untergraben und sie werden aus dem Verkehr gezogen. Diese Objekte werden in eine neue Form transformiert, die keinem monetären Zweck mehr dient.
Diese Arbeit bezieht sich auf Joseph Beuys‘ Begriff der »heilenden« Gesellschaft und bringt ihn im heutigen Kontext zur Sprache. Wie wird »Heilung« gewährleistet? Wie wird der Heilungsprozess verstanden? Angenommen, der Mensch hat ein Bewusstsein, wie kann dieses Bewusstsein in heilende Handlungen für die Gesellschaft umgesetzt werden?
Diese Fragen von Beuys werden »neu hinterfragbar« unter den Bedingungen der aktuellen Pandemie, die die gesamte Zivilisation betrifft. Und das heutige Bedürfnis nach Heilung bezieht sich buchstäblich auf eine biologische Heilung. Wie kann diese Heilung gewährleistet werden?
Die Künstlerin unterstreicht mit dieser Arbeit die wirtschaftliche und finanzielle Ungleichheit, die während der Pandemie sichtbarer geworden ist. Diese Arbeit hinterfragt die Elemente der wirtschaftlichen Macht, Potenz und Autorität, indem sie die aktuelle Pandemie und Heilungsprozesse hervorhebt.
